Collaborations and Test Shoots
Types of "Test Shoots"
The term "test shoot" is used in two similar but different ways in the photography industry. The first way is a commercial model portfolio building session - the model (or agency) dictates the type, tone, and desired results. This is a paid session and can take a full day (even multiple days and locations!). The model has exclusive rights to use the shots to advance their career.
The second way "test shoot" is used is as a collaboration between the model and photographer (and often hair and makeup artist as well). In this case, no money exchanges hands because the photos are the payment for everyone involved. None of the collaborators has an exclusive - everyone involved can use the photos to advance their careers or skills. Generally, in the rare case that a photo from the shoot is actually purchased, the collaborators often share the profits as agreed.
Ian McAnerin frequently does collaborations in order to create artistic works or to test new ideas or equipment. The only requirement is that the end product must be artistically or technically interesting (or fun!). It's not a way to get a free portrait. It's a way to create art and increase everyones experience and talents. If you have a great idea, or if you are interested in contributing to a great idea, contact him and see if there is an opportunity to work together. He is fond of collaborating with talented cosplayers and undiscovered superstars.
