Portrait Client Guide

Preparing for Your Portrait Session

Welcome! I’m excited to capture your upcoming portrait session. Whether this is your first professional photoshoot or you’re a seasoned pro, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring you have a fantastic experience and get stunning results. This guide will help you get ready, covering everything from what to expect, to clothing and makeup tips, to props and common pitfalls to avoid.

What to Expect

  1. Pre-Session Consultation: We’ll start with a brief consultation (either in person, over the phone, or via email) to discuss your vision for the session. We’ll cover everything from the look and feel you want to achieve to the types of images you’re hoping for. This is a great time to ask any questions and share any specific requests or ideas.
  2. The Day of the Shoot:
    • Arrive at the agreed location a few minutes early to settle in and get comfortable.
    • We’ll start with some test shots to adjust lighting and make sure you feel at ease.
    • Throughout the session, I’ll guide you through poses and expressions to capture your best angles. Don’t worry about being “perfect”—I’m here to help you look your best!
  3. After the Shoot:
      • I’ll provide a preview of the best images, and you’ll have the opportunity to select your favorites.
      • The selected images will be professionally retouched and delivered to you in both high-resolution digital format and, if desired, print-ready files.

Clothing Tips

  1. Choose Flattering Outfits:
    • Select clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Solid colors and classic styles work best, as they keep the focus on you.
    • Avoid busy patterns, logos, or overly bright colors, as they can be distracting. Neutral tones, pastels, and jewel tones are all excellent choices.
  2. Consider Layers and Textures:
    • Layers, such as a jacket or scarf, add dimension to your look. Textured fabrics like knits, lace, or denim photograph beautifully and add visual interest.
  3. Coordinate, Don’t Match:
    • If you’re taking group or family portraits, aim for coordinated outfits without being overly matchy. Choose complementary colors and styles that work well together.
  4. Plan for Footwear:
    • Remember to bring appropriate footwear, especially if we’ll be walking to various locations. Comfortable shoes for moving around and a pair of stylish shoes for the photos are a good idea.
  5. Bring a Few Options:
    • Bring 2-3 different outfits to change up the look during the session. This will give you variety in your final images. Include casual, semi-formal, and statement pieces for different moods.

Makeup and Grooming Tips

  1. Keep Makeup Natural:
    • Go for a natural, polished look that enhances your features without being too heavy. Avoid experimenting with new makeup products right before the shoot.
    • Use a primer to smooth your skin and ensure your makeup lasts. Matte foundation works best to reduce shine, and a touch of highlighter can add a beautiful glow.
  2. Accentuate the Eyes and Lips:
    • Define your eyes with eyeliner and mascara to make them stand out. For lips, choose a color that complements your skin tone—neutral or soft shades for a natural look, or a bold lip for a more dramatic effect.
  3. Hair:
    • Wear your hair in a style that makes you feel confident. Avoid drastic changes right before the shoot. If you’re planning to get a haircut, do so at least a week in advance to allow the style to settle.
  4. Men:
    • A fresh shave or well-groomed beard is essential. If you’re prone to redness after shaving, shave the night before rather than the day of the shoot.

Props and Accessories

  1. Personal Items:
    • Bring items that reflect your personality or tell a story—like a musical instrument, favorite book, or sports equipment. These props can add depth and individuality to your portraits.
  2. Seasonal or Themed Props:
    • If we’re doing a themed or seasonal shoot (e.g., holiday cards), feel free to bring relevant props like festive decorations, scarves, or themed accessories.
  3. Accessories:
    • Simple jewelry, scarves, or hats can add a nice touch to your outfit. Avoid anything too flashy or distracting.
  4. Bring a Backup:
    • Consider bringing a few backup accessories or props just in case we want to try different options during the shoot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Overthinking Poses:
    • Trust the process! I’ll guide you through natural poses that suit you. Trying too hard to strike a “perfect” pose can lead to stiffness. Just relax and be yourself.
  2. Ignoring Grooming Details:
    • Check nails, hair, and any visible tattoos or marks. Make sure they align with the look you want. A quick grooming check can prevent minor distractions in your photos.
  3. Overloading on Accessories:
    • Less is more. Avoid over-accessorizing, which can take the focus away from you. One or two pieces that complement your outfit are perfect.
  4. Wearing Uncomfortable Clothes:
    • Avoid clothing that’s too tight, too loose, or uncomfortable. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in your photos. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and at ease.
  5. Not Hydrating or Eating Beforehand:
    • Make sure to drink plenty of water and have a light meal before your session. This will keep you feeling energized and looking fresh throughout the shoot.
